“I just can’t seem to get my cleaning business growing consistently”
Yep, I hear that all the time and after helping dozens of Cleaning Business break that magical Million Dollar mark I’m here to say that the one thing they did is have a budget in mind for marketing, month after month!
Now, sometimes you have hiring issues preventing that growth as well, but if you have that covered carry-on!
My brief summary so you can understand where I’m coming from!
My name is Ray Malaski and I’m the co-founder of Missy’s Maids and Maid in Minute! I was in the Cleaning Industry for about 8 years, I sold Maid in a Minute in 2016, and then again in 2017 (long story there) and went 100% into Marketing for cleaning business owners, under the Web Launch Local brand and why not?
Cleaning business owners were already my peers and I really had a great handle on how to rank a website for SEO, properly run a solid Google Ad’s campaign, people already knew me and came to me for advice, so it seemed like the next logical step, plus I LOVED doing it. I found my first 3 clients, all of whom are still with me to this day!
Now…
FF to the marketing budget and the real reason why you’re here 🙂
I wanted to make this simple for you, and the numbers are just suggestions but the here is an excerpt from the article in reference.
As a general rule, small businesses with revenues less than $5 million should allocate 7-8 percent of their revenues to marketing. This budget should be split between 1) brand development costs (which includes all the channels you use to promote your brand such as your website, blogs, sales collateral, etc.), and 2) the costs of promoting your business(campaigns, advertising, events, etc.).”
“This percentage also assumes you have margins in the range of 10-12 percent (after you’ve covered your other expenses, including marketing).
I don’t know many cleaning businesses doing over 5 million but I do know they exist, especially in the Commercial Cleaning markets, but I do know quite a few that are over that 1+ Million mark goal and that’s where we want you to get as well and why I stated with this article, its about mindset and needed to know your numbers so you can make an educated decision on where to go next!
I’m going to make this simple and do the general math for you!
Note: Your numbers don’t need to match these but they need to make sense for your business most importantly, I have heard start’ups toss around numbers as high as 15% of revenue so it really depends on you and what you’re comfortable with doing.
Bottom line, FIGURE OUT A BUDGET!
The SBA states that you should plan on budgeting 7-8% of Gross Revenue to Marketing for business under 5 Million.
Annual Gross Rev Annual Budget
- 100K = 7,000 – 8,000
- 250K = 17,500 – 20,000
- 500k = 35,000 – 40,000
- 750k = 52,500 – 60,000
- 1Mil = 70,000 – 80,000
Monthly Budget at 7 and 8 %
- 100K = 583.33 – 667.00/m
- 250K = 1,458.33 – 1,667.00
- 500K = 2,916.67 – 3,333.33
- 750K = 4,375.00 – 5,000.00
- 1 Mil = 5,833.33 – 6,667.00
I know many of you may already have one, and that’s absolutely amazing, but either way, you need to be spending it! If, you’re not and you wonder why your growth is minimal or stagnant you know why!
